Indications:
Metoprolol is used to manage mild to severe hypertension, long term treatment of angina pectoris and reduces the risk of death after a heart attack. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by the physician.
How to take:
Take metoprolol as directed by the physician. Do not take the medication in large amounts for long periods unless recommended by the doctor. This drug should be taken with a full glass of water before or after a meal at the same time every day. It is not advisable to skip doses or stop without doctor′s order as it may worsen the condition. Blood pressure needs to be checked on a regular basis to be sure the drug is effective. Precautions:
Do not suddenly stop taking Metoprolol. It may create adverse reaction such as sharp chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and heart attack if withdrawn suddenly. The doctor should be the one to lower the dose within several weeks. Metoprolol can also cause side effect such as drowsiness therefore it is advised not to drive or operate machinery while on drug therapy. It is also important to avoid drinking alcohol as it increases drowsiness and dizziness. Always follow your diet, medication and exercise to help lower blood pressure.
