Zidolam-N (Zidovudine, Lamivudine & Nevirapine) is a combination drug that contains lamivudine, zidovudine and nevirapine and has an antiviral effect.
Lamivudine and zidovudine have a synergistic inhibitory effect on the replication of the human immunodeficiency viruses HIV-1 and HIV-2. Both active ingredients of the drug are metabolized intracellularly to triphosphates. Lamivudine triphosphate and zidovudine triphosphate are selective competitive inhibitors of human immunodeficiency virus reverse transcriptase. The main mechanism of antiviral activity is interference in the form of monophosphate into the viral DNA chain, which will result in the termination of its replication. This combination prevents the development of zidovudine resistance in patients who have not previously received antiretroviral therapy.
Nevirapine, which is part of Zidolam-N, is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It binds directly to reverse transcriptase and blocks RNA and DNA-dependent reactions of DNA polymerase, disrupting the catalytic center of the enzyme. Nevirapine is not competitive with nucleosides and nucleoside triphosphates.
